1960
Faculty Senate of Yonsei University was constructed in October 1960 the first time in our country. In April 1960 the democratic movement after the revolution, the school provided the opportunity to be drastically reorganized, President and Chairman of the board was separated Faculty Senate of Yonsei University was installed as an academic decision making board. At that time period due to the April Revolution, the democratic movement arose at Yonsei, particularly in professors who required to resolve tenure issues and school reform organizations. Thus, May 18, 1960 reorganization of school organization committee was consisted of the professorate and school organization restructuring the draft was submitted to the Board of Directors. There was conflict between the board and the faculty meeting at the time but they reached a resolution and agreed to keep the Faculty Senate. According to the time of the resolution, the Faculty Senate as a decision making institution was to be consisted of Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Dean, head librarian, chaplain and professors representing each college. At the time functions of the Senate were: 1. Establish an academic policy within the educational purposes 2. Suggest installation, change or deletion on colleges, Institutes and other affiliated institutions 3. Discussions on the enactment of important school rules and other matters of general advice, 4. Other features can be added by installing the findings of the Faculty Senate by the Board of Directors. Also the fact that Faculty Senate is related to Colleges’ independence that the chancellor has to consult the Faculty Senate to rearrange school committees, the fact the College of law, College of Engineering, College of Music, College of Dentistry, College of Nursing’ expansion research was commissioned from the Faculty Senate to the Board of Directors shows how active and highly respected the senate was. However, the Senate was disbanded by the military in 1961.
1974
Faculty Senate disbanded in 1961, was reconstructed in November 1974. September 29, 1974 October 8 after the Yonsei-Korea League, the school administration was paralyzed by student protests demanding reform throughout the school administration and classes were cancelled. At Luce Chapel in October 18 a probation reform of the university campus events were announced by the President Park Dae Sun. First the gist of his presentation was the launch of the Faculty Senate and Professor Council. At the time, Faculty Senate intended to perform its role as democratization and perform a diversion charge against the School Public Administration.

There were professor councils at the time but it was difficult to gather the professors in one place. Thus Faculty Senate functioned as a representative organization that proposed on regulation personnel, research professor institutions, research professor of activation measures, studious atmosphere.
However, failure in acquiring a legal status, and budget problems, the University’s issues on accepting the senate became a problem and the senate dissembled in a year.
1980
Third Faculty Senate was inaugurated in April 1980. However, in 1980, Faculty Senate fell apart again due to the May 18 Kwangju Democratization Movement and 5.17.
1988
Fourth Faculty Senate was born on July 21, 1988. This is the earlier version of the currently active senate. The Senate was established in the atmosphere of widespread demands for liberalization of June 1987 National Resistance and soon anti-dictatorship throughout society. In addition a demand for democratization and liberation within university administration also became the reason of reestablishment
April 15, 1988 8 professors went into action and agreed to launch a Research Council and the Preparatory Committee for the Faculty Senate of Yonsei University. Following Research Council, the draft constitution prepared by a committee of professors’ council was created and the final amendment was attached to the final vote to the whole professors on July 6, 1988. Yonsei University Council in accordance with the established rules of a society held the inaugural meeting of July 21, 1988 and was launched as a representative organization of the professor body.
