President Seoung Hwan Suh delivered his farewell address at the retirement ceremony, marking the end of his four-year term. The ceremony, held on January 23rd (Tuesday) at 3:00 PM in the Luce Chapel, was attended by over 200 individuals, including various internal and external stakeholders, who offered words of encouragement for President Suh's dedicated service and extended their support for his new beginning.
President Suh commenced his term on February 1, 2020, serving as the 19th President for the past four years. Despite commencing his term amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, President Suh, in his inaugural year of 2020, declared the vision 'Yonsei: Toward Truth and Freedom' to foster 'innovative leaders with a community spirit.' He emphasized ' Excellence,' 'Innovation,' and 'Engagement' as core values.
In a pioneering effort to lead the revolution in higher education and knowledge sharing, President Suh opened the online education platform 'LearnUs' to the general public in September 2021, making Yonsei the first domestic higher education institution to do so. Establishing the College of Computing and expanding Integrated Technology majors, President Suh provided an educational environment to nurture innovative leaders crucial for the evolving times. Notably, Yonsei University attracted the first quantum computer in Korea and the fifth globally, contributing to the accumulation and enhancement of potential research capabilities. Through initiatives like establishing the Yonsei University Development Committee in 2021, a record-breaking fundraising amount of KRW 400 billion was achieved over the past four years, marking the highest fundraising total in its history.
With bold investments and diversified support, Yonsei University climbed to 76th place in both QS and THE World University Rankings, securing the top spot among private Asian universities and breaking into the top 70 globally. Particularly in the 2024 QS Asia University Rankings, Yonsei achieved a historic milestone, ranking 1st in Korea and 8th in Asia, showcasing the remarkable growth of our university.

During the ceremony, President Suh expressed profound gratitude to all members of the Yonsei community who accompanied him throughout the past four years, reflecting on the remarkable journey.

Having assumed the role of an assistant professor in the Department of Economics at our university in 1987, President Seoung Hwan Suh dedicated 36 years of his life to the service of Yonsei. During the ceremony, he reminisced, stating, 'The time at Yonsei, spent in the company of many wonderful individuals, has been an incredibly joyful period.' Attendees at the ceremony, representing the Yonsei community, offered warm applause and presented bouquets to President Suh, expressing deep gratitude for his lifelong dedication to Yonsei.
