On the morning of the auspicious year of Gapjin (甲辰年) 2024, when the sun of hope rose, the Yonsei family gathered for a special moment to celebrate the beginning of the New Year.
On January 2nd at 11 AM, the '2024 Yonsei Faculty & Staff New Year's Celebration' took place at the Concert Hall, Centennial Hall. Attended by numerous faculty members, including President Seoung Hwan Suh, the event marked the commencement of the hopeful year 2024 with an unwavering commitment to Yonsei's bold challenges toward truth and freedom.
Even before the event commenced, the entrance of the concert hall buzzed with faculty members attending the ceremony. Participants formed long lines, exchanging New Year's wishes and warm handshakes, creating a heartwarming scene showcasing the Yonsei community's strong bond.
The New Year's greetings, initiated with a prelude by Professor Shin Dong-ill (Department of Church Music), unfolded in a solemn atmosphere. Attendees joined their voices in singing hymns and reciting the '2024 Prayer of Yonsei,' pledging their determination to address the challenges faced by our society and humanity through education and research.
On this day, President Seoung Hwan Suh remarked, "In the midst of global issues such as climate change, pandemics, war, inequalities in income and wealth, and social polarization, Korean society is at a critical juncture." He emphasized, "We will continually be dedicated to innovation and the sustainable future of humanity through education, research, and social contribution; we will gauge the changes and challenges of the global post-COVID era, as well as the looming advent of general artificial intelligence; intrepid, we will respond swiftly with understanding with responses changes and challenges."
President Suh continued, "Through collaboration, dedication, and innovation, Yonsei will prevail in this journey to the uncertain future and become an exemplar of global higher education." He expressed gratitude to the Yonsei family for their companionship along the challenging yet joyful and fulfilling journey, saying, "You have walked and deliberated together on this path, to reach a new Yonsei and a new future."
Continuing, he stated, "In its 138 years of history, Yonsei has pioneered modern medicine with Chejungwon, devoted itself to preserving the national spirit with Yonhi College, and shepherded Korean society through industrialization, democratization, and informatization as Yonsei University. Yonsei, which has carried out its duty and mission over these years, must once again begin our march for the new future. "
He further conveyed, "To quote from a poem by Jung Ho-seung, "Even where the road ends, there is yet a road." I sincerely hope that each and every one of the Yonsei family will walk endlessly on his or her own road, become the very road itself, towards spring."
At the event, Professor Yang JunMo (Department of Voice) presented a special stage. Professor Yang JunMo, a renowned baritone and a representative opera singer of South Korea, captivated the audience with a heartfelt performance of the song 'Oh Lord My God, When I In Awesome Wonder.'
Following the New Year's greetings event, attendees gathered at the Baekyangro Underground(The Commons) Grand Ballroom to share a moment over Tteokguk, engaging in conversations and exchanging New Year's wishes.

O God, Creator of the universe and all within,
As we embrace the year of Gapjin(Blue Dragon), we at Yonsei come before You with renewed hearts and determination. Guide us fully in our tasks and journeys.
Jesus, Redeemer from all bonds,
Look upon humanity, living in sin and undervaluing life, and upon all creation groaning under human greed and selfishness. Heal them with Your gracious light.
Holy Spirit, the Preserver of peace,
Lead us all in the march towards liberation, making us instruments of Your peace.
God, the true sovereign of Yonsei,
You sent visionaries like Allen, Underwood, and Avison to establish Yonsei in this land. May we continue the Yonsei spirit, embraced in Your love, and further enhance the global stature of our esteemed institution.
God, who called us into the Yonsei fellowship,
With the abundant grace You have provided, enable us to fulfill our individual callings. Make us role models and benefactors within the Yonsei community. In love, unite us, breaking down barriers and collaborating to foster goodness in the heart of Yonsei.
God, who called us to discipleship,
In answering Your call, we stand ready. May our teaching and research address the challenges facing our society and humanity, and be utilized for noble endeavors.
