Yonsei’s Relentless Spirit Secures Basketball and Football Wins, Ending in a Draw

The "2024 Annual Yonsei University-Korea University Friendly Match (hereafter Yon-Ko Games)" took place on September 27th and 28th in Seoul, Mokdong, and Goyang.

Marking its 59th year, the Yon-Ko Games celebrate the deep friendship and tradition between the two premier universities in Korea. The event serves as a grand festival where students, alumni, and faculty come together in unity. This year, Yonsei University secured victories in basketball (57-54) and football (2-1), while narrowly losing in baseball (0-3) and ice hockey (3-4), resulting in an overall draw.

The 2024 Yon-Ko Games officially commenced at 10:30 AM on September 27th at Jamsil Baseball Stadium. This year’s opening ceremony began with a moment of tribute to a Korea University rugby player who tragically passed away during training.

In his opening remarks, Korea University President praised the hard work of the athletes, while Yonsei University President Dong-sup Yoon emphasized the importance of sportsmanship in his address. Following remarks from General Student Council President Hahm Hyeongjin, athletes from both universities pledged to uphold fairness and integrity in competition. The ceremony concluded with both universities' presidents, alumni presidents, and athletic directors presenting bouquets of friendship to the opposing teams, student councils, and cheer squads who worked tirelessly to prepare for the event.

At 11:30 AM, the baseball game began. Our players fought hard to create scoring opportunities, but struggled to get on base due to Korea University's solid defense. In the end, without securing any additional runs, the game concluded with a disappointing 0-3 loss.

At 2:00 PM, the ice hockey game took place at the Mokdong Ice Rink. Korea University took the lead just 4 minutes into the first period. Although they continued with several threatening shots, our team successfully defended the goal. Later, our team broke through Korea University’s defense and scored, shifting the momentum. In the second period, despite our team's aggressive play with 14 effective shots on goal, we ended up conceding two additional points.

Early in the third period, our team quickly leveled the score with two consecutive goals. Riding on the momentum of these back-to-back goals, we launched a counterattack, but Korea University took advantage of the defenders being pushed forward in the offensive zone and scored, ending the game 3-4.

At 5 p.m., the basketball game took place at the Goyang Gymnasium. The first quarter ended in a tight contest with a score of 15-15. In the second quarter, our university briefly fell behind 19-21, but with a strong offensive push, we closed the first half with a 39-29 lead.

The third quarter saw a lull in scoring, but our team managed to break through and finished the quarter with a 47-40 lead. In the highly anticipated final quarter, despite two of our players sustaining injuries, we secured the win with a decisive three-point shot and a dunk, ending the game with a 57-54 victory.

On the second day of the Yon-Ko Games, on September 28 at 2:00 PM, the soccer match took place at Goyang Stadium. Just 9 minutes into the first half, our team gained momentum by scoring the opening goal during a corner kick. Both teams had several shooting attempts throughout the remainder of regulation time, but neither side managed to score again. However, in the third minute of extra time during the second half, Korea University scored with a shot from the left side of the penalty box.

With only four minutes remaining, the determination of the Yonsei players and the passionate support of the Yonsei community were unstoppable, despite the limited time. In the 7th minute of extra time, a cross was delivered and successfully headed into the net, securing a dramatic victory for Yonsei University.

This year’s Yon-Ko Games were a testament to the passion and unity of the Yonsei community. The players relentlessly pursued victory, while the cheering students stood by them, sharing in their challenges and triumphs. The event showcased values that went beyond mere wins and losses. We send our heartfelt encouragement to the athletes who have worked tirelessly throughout the year to prepare for the Yon-Ko Games, and we hope this year’s event becomes a cherished memory for all Yonseians.
