Yonsei University Ranks 11th Globally in the THE Impact Rankings 2024

Ranked No. 1 in Asia, Secures World No. 1 in 'Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure' (SDG 9) Category

Yonsei University has been ranked 11th globally and 1st in Asia in the 'THE Impact Rankings 2024,’ announced on June 12.

Yonsei University, which rose three places from 14th last year, has demonstrated its commitment to social responsibility and a sustainable future by consistently rising in the Impact Rankings for five consecutive years, in addition to traditional rankings focused on education and research.

The THE Impact Rankings, organized by the UK's global university ranking agency Times Higher Education (THE), assess universities' contributions towards the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agreed upon by the United Nations. This year, 1,963 universities participated in the evaluation, an increase of 372 from last year, reflecting the growing global interest in the social role of universities.

Yonsei University achieved remarkable individual SDG rankings, securing 1st place globally in SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) with a perfect score. The university also ranked 2nd globally in SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and 6th globally in SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions).

The university’s outstanding performance is the result of comprehensive efforts. Since 2017, Yonsei University has hosted the Global Engagement & Empowerment Forum on Sustainable Development (GEEF), which has grown into a global forum with over 10,000 participants from more than 100 countries. This initiative leverages the university’s intellectual and human resources to address global social issues as an ‘Engaged University.’

In addition to the GEEF event, Yonsei University implements various programs aimed at sustainable development, including SDG-related curricular and extracurricular programs, the Social Engagement Fund, and SDG practice contests. The university has also produced 1,127 teams and 6,233 social innovation talents through its student-led social problem-solving platform, Workstation, fostering an understanding of coexistence and sustainable problem-solving approaches.

Moreover, Yonsei University is conducting the ‘SDG Initiative’ project, which categorizes the university’s research by SDG sectors to review its academic practices contributing to sustainable development. This project, based on the premise that all academic achievements are related to sustainable development, has analyzed approximately 85,000 research outputs over the past 13 years in alignment with SDG categories. The initiative aims to promote awareness changes among researchers, foster multidisciplinary approaches to domestic and international issues, and build SDG-focused social problem-solving groups.

President Dong-Sup Yoon stated, “This achievement is the result of efforts to enhance the university’s social responsibility and expand the positive impact of the Yonsei spirit on solving global social issues, in addition to our focus on education and research.” He further added, “We will lead the way in creating a sustainable future for humanity through innovative research and social responsibility.”
