On June 1, Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, was ranked first in Korea and 14th in the world in the THE World University Impact Rankings 2023, released by Times Higher Education (THE), a global higher education assessment agency in the United Kingdom.

The THE Impact Rankings, first conducted in 2019, measure universities' achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their contribution to society. The SDGs, adopted by the UN in 2015, are the international community's common objectives to end the problems facing all humankind, consisting of 17 goals, including poverty, health, education, climate change, and employment issues. This assessment evaluates the degree of implementation by dividing the universities' role in these 17 SDGs into three broad areas: research, stewardship, and outreach.

The THE Impact Rankings differs from existing university assessments which focus on global competitiveness centered on growth and performances, such as research achievements and educational environment, in that it uses universities' social responsibilities to solve global challenges as its main evaluation criteria. As the global interest in the social responsibility of universities has been increasing, the number of participating universities has more than doubled over the past four years, and the assessment’s status is continuously rising.

In this year's THE Impact Rankings, Yonsei University ranked 14th globally, with more than 1,500 universities worldwide participating. Yonsei rose 13 places from the 27th of last year and has continued to rise for four years in the Impact Rankings as well as other existing university evaluations. Yonsei is establishing itself as a university that fulfills its mission for a sustainable future for humanity.

For each SDG, Yonsei University ranked ▲ 5th in the world in industry, innovation, and infrastructure (SDG 9), ▲ 8th in the world in responsible consumption and production (SDG 12), ▲ 27th in the world in decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), and ▲ 47th in the world in partnerships for the goals (SDG 17).

In 2017, Yonsei University launched the "Institute for Global Engagement and Empowerment (IGEE)," an SDGs-specialized institution to integrate various resources and capabilities such as education and research of the university and contribute to sustainable development and social contribution. Through holding the annual event "Global Engagement and Empowerment Forum on Sustainable Development (GEEF)," various stakeholders from around the world, including opinion leaders, international organizations, and industries, participate in viewing the sustainable future and forming a meaningful venue for discourse to achieve SDGs.

Yonsei also provides SDGs-related professional lectures through the open knowledge-sharing platform "LearnUs," such as "Sustainable Product Consumption," "Artificial Intelligence for Innovation Policy," and "Understanding ESG," and supports students to solve social problems directly and fosters talent who practice social innovation through curricular and extracurricular programs at the Institute for Higher Education Innovation (IHEI) and the Innovation Center for Engineering Education (ICEE).

Regarding SDG 9, in which Yonsei ranked fifth in the world, Yonsei will be the second university in the world to build an IBM quantum system on campus in 2024. Quantum computers are used in various research fields such as finance, cryptography, developing new drugs, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology. They are called "game changers" that can surpass existing supercomputers. Through quantum information technology research and international cooperative networks, Yonsei will establish itself as a global leader in creating a quantum ecosystem and revitalizing related industries.

President Seoung Hwan Suh of Yonsei University expressed his ambition to fulfill the mission of the times given to universities through "social contribution" along with education and research, saying, "Yonsei University will serve as a role in the leading group in overcoming current uncertainties and crisis and presenting a sustainable future for humankind as a super-class university centered on the value of "engagement," which we declared through our "Vision-Yonsei 150."
