Yonsei's 14 Fields Ranked in World's Top 50, Most Number among Private Universities in Korea

No. 1 in Korea in 9 subjects, world top 50 in 14 subjects


On March 22, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a global university evaluation agency in the United Kingdom, announced the "QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023." Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, ranked first in Korea in nine different fields. And Yonsei also has got 14 fields ranked in the world's top 50, making it the top private university in Korea.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject cover a total of 54 disciplines, grouped into five broad subject areas: ▲ Arts & Humanities, ▲ Social Sciences & Management, ▲ Natural Sciences, ▲ Engineering and Technology, and ▲ Life Sciences & Medicine. The evaluation index consists of a total of five categories: ▲ Academic reputation, ▲ Employee reputation, ▲ Research citations paper, ▲ H-index, and ▲ International Research Network (IRN).

In this QS Subject Rankings 2023, Yonsei University showed a steep rise compared to the previous year, especially rising 21 steps in Social Sciences & Management, ten steps in Engineering and Technology, and nine steps in Life Sciences & Medicine.

By specific subjects, Yonsei ranked in the world's top 50 in each of the following subjects: ▲ Social Policy and Administration (No. 19), ▲ Modern Languages (No. 25), ▲ Library and Information Management (No. 26), ▲ Dentistry (No. 28), ▲ Sports-Related Subjects (No. 29), ▲ Sociology (No. 40), ▲ Business and Management Studies (No. 43), ▲ Communication and Media Studies (No. 43), ▲ Politics (No. 43), ▲ Theology, Divinity and Religious Studies (No. 44), ▲ Development Studies (No. 45), ▲ Engineering – Chemical (No. 46), ▲ Architecture and Built Environment (No. 49), and ▲ Nursing (No. 49). The number of specific subjects in the world top 50 has increased significantly to 14 this year from the previous two and six, proving Yonsei’s excellence in various disciplines.

Yonsei University ranked 73rd in the QS World University Rankings in June last year and 78th in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings in October, ranking it in the top 80 in both the QS and THE rankings, the most trusted university evaluation agencies. Yonsei University, which has continued to break its record in the recently announced university evaluations, has also solidified its position as South Korea's top private university, including 14 subjects in the top 50 in this year’s QS Subject Rankings.

Yonsei University plans to continue its upward trend by strengthening its research competitiveness by discovering and attracting excellent researchers and supporting promising fields in the future, and continue to return Yonsei's education and research results to society under the value of "engagement." In particular, with the new addition of the IRN indicator from this year's evaluation, it is expected that universities will be able to continue to develop only when higher-level research capabilities at the global level and activation of international joint research are supported.
