Yonsei soars to 85th place globally in QS World University Rankings 2021
Yonsei University ranked 85th globally in the QS World University Rankings 2021 released today, leaping 19 places compared to last year and reaching the top 7.2% of universities worldwide.
In particular, Yonsei University has strengthened its standing in university reputation, placing among the world’s leading universities in academic reputation (top 90) and employer reputation (top 50) based on peer reviews from domestic and international academics and company employers drawn from global surveys. Another key contributor to Yonsei’s success in this year’s rankings is its strong performance in internationalization, which has steadily improved compared to other universities in the nation.
Produced by global higher education consultancy Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) since 2004, the QS World University Rankings annually evaluate the world’s top 1,604 universities across six indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, faculty/student ratio, international faculty ratio, and international student ratio. Releasing its seventeenth edition this year, the rankings are recognized as one of the world’s most-referenced sources of information on university performance by global education consumers and stakeholders, including students, educational institutions, and government organizations.
Yonsei University has shown outstanding performance in global university rankings for its social contribution and research output, recently having placed first in South Korea and 47th globally in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2020, and third nationally and 147th globally in Nature Index 2020. These results, along with the latest QS World University rankings, reflect Yonsei’s commitment to addressing the needs and challenges of society through high quality research and academic leadership.
For example, in the wake of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Yonsei University launched a webinar series in partnership with international organizations, including World Bank Group, to lead cooperation in public health and medical sectors for nations seeking advice on national response and control measures. Professor Baik Lin Seong (Biotechnology) has been selected to lead a high-profile, government-initiated research project to develop domestic vaccines against infectious diseases, including COVID-19, tuberculosis, and hepatitis A.
Celebrating its 135th anniversary in May 2020, Yonsei University has declared a new university vision, “Yonsei: Toward Truth and Freedom,” under the stewardship of the recently inaugurated President Seoung Hwan Suh. “A university is a place that produces public goods,” said President Suh during his inaugural address last February. “We must always bear in mind that Yonsei University should continue to be a place of impactful action and achievements that contribute to the development of our society and humankind.”
