Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings 2019 recognizes universities’ social and economic impact
The inaugural Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings 2019, released on April 3, has placed Yonsei University number one in the world for Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure out of more than 300 universities from 63 countries.
Aimed at recognizing universities’ positive impact on society, the new ranking focuses on institutions’ performance in achieving United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – the blueprint to build a sustainable future for humanity. The first of its kind, the ranking referenced 11 of the 17 SDGs, with each SDG assessed across broad areas: research, outreach, and stewardship.
The ranking for SDG #9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure was based on universities’ research on industry and innovation, their number of patents and spin-off companies, and their research income from industry. The list is led by Yonsei University, while the University of Tokyo (Japan) and KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden) complete the top three. Yonsei University is one of the first Korean universities to rank number one in an individual SDG ranking.
This achievement reflects the influential work taking place at Yonsei University and the positive impact it is having on the domestic and international community.
"Yonsei University is developing an innovative model for industry-academic cooperation with local startups, companies, and government research institutes," a Yonsei University representative commented. "We are strengthening efforts to educate global talent that can lead the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution."
Among major university initiatives, Yonsei University is also establishing Yonsei Science Park, a research hub for converged industrial and academic research, at its International Campus in Songdo, Incheon.
