[Student Interview] A Serendipitous Choice: My Journey of Discovery and Growth
[Student Interview] A Serendipitous Choice: My Journey of Discovery and Growth

Underwood International College Student Alfiya Kenes from Republic of Kazakhstan

Name: Alfiya Kenes
Nationality: Republic of Kazakhstan
College: Underwood International College (UIC)
Major: Life Science and Biotechnology (LSBT) and Economics (Econ) (entering class of ’22.5)

Prior to my college application, I focused solely on US universities. After months of hard work, I applied to several US institutions and received acceptance letters. It was during the process of choosing which university would be my home for the next four years when I unexpectedly discovered that Korean universities, including Underwood International College of Yonsei University, were also available on the Common App. Intrigued, I researched UIC Yonsei and found it offered excellent education and research opportunities in English. Without much hesitation, I decided to apply to Yonsei in early spring 2022. While awaiting the results, I delved into videos about student life at Yonsei and Korean culture. By the end of June 2022, I received my acceptance letter from Yonsei University. I found myself more excited about this acceptance than those from US universities. Ultimately, it became clear to both me and my family that Yonsei was the right choice. Although I didn’t initially know why Yonsei felt like the perfect fit, my experience there has since illuminated the reasons behind my decision.

Choosing the major was challenging for me because, since childhood, I've been interested in everything from sciences to arts and history. However, I realized that college doesn’t have to confine me to a single career path and that I can grow in multiple directions. I wanted a major that reflected my interests and passions, and where I could envision a professional future. Science fascinates me because it explores the world and its workings Therefore, as my major, I chose life science and biotechnology, where I can learn about diverse topics involving everything living and creating different mechanisms and systems that will enhance this living environment. It is not only exciting but also a critical path for the development of humanity.

When I first arrived in Korea at 17, I was stepping out into the world for the first time. During my first semester at Yonsei University, I made great friends, but I still struggled with homesickness and a longing for my family back home. Looking back, I realize that this experience of initial homesickness is common for many people. However, facing these challenges helps you grow stronger and step out of your comfort zone, allowing you to reach new heights you might have thought were beyond you. During this time, Korean culture and the kindness of the people were incredibly helpful. Whenever I needed assistance, whether asking for directions on the subway or other help, I never encountered anyone unwilling to help, even if they didn't speak English and I didn't know Korean. Now, after two years of living in Korea, eating Korean food, and immersing myself in the culture, I can’t imagine being anywhere else that feels more suitable and comfortable.

This past spring semester of 2024, I worked as a Harmony supporter at the Global One-stop Service Center, where I gained invaluable experience helping fellow international students. In addition, serving as the Director of the Education Department for the LSBT student council also involved handling international and educational duties. My role at GOSC significantly contributed to my development, as we assisted students with various international issues, from visa problems to adapting to life in Korea. I contributed to card news designs and primarily worked on videography as a member of the Video Team. Initially, I had doubts about my design and creative abilities due to my major being in a different field. However, this experience showed me that the world is vast, and even small individual efforts can lead to significant impact.

I have always strived to be a person of multiple talents, so I aim to use my knowledge in biotech and economics to start something of my own in the healthcare field. Despite my diverse interests, I’ve always wanted to help and bring joy to people’s lives, making the health field a perfect fit for me. Additionally, I want to maintain my passion for videography and the arts, even if not professionally, and make it a constant part of my life. The success of my LSBT upper alumni, who have excelled in various fields from law and medicine to business and the arts, inspires me to believe that I can pursue all my interests and become whoever I want to be.

I mentioned earlier that discovering Yonsei and ending up here felt sudden. However, I now know for certain that I was meant to be here and that Yonsei University is the perfect place for me at this moment. Being an international student abroad is challenging, but Yonsei has provided me with numerous opportunities and reasons to grow and evolve. Freedom is crucial to me, and Yonsei has offered me the freedom to choose, a life full of growth, and the chance to explore different aspects of myself. I never imagined I would be a biotechnology major, double majoring in economics, and working in a field involving creativity and videography. Yonsei has taught me that I don't have to limit myself to one path, that I can pursue multiple interests, and that there is much more to discover about my talents if I am willing to explore them. Embrace every moment and opportunity. Don’t be afraid to try new things and explore your strengths and abilities—you’re the one who adds color to your life.
