President Seoung Hwan Suh has been honored with an honorary doctorate in economics from Keio University in Japan. The degree conferral ceremony took place on December 13th at 2:00 PM at Keio University's Mita Campus.

Keio University recognized President Seoung Hwan Suh for his contributions as the president of our university, his research achievements in urban economics, and his overall contributions to academic development. The university also acknowledged his numerous societal contributions, including his service as the former Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of South Korea. In light of these achievements, Keio University conferred upon him the honorary doctorate in economics.

The ceremony was attended by key figures from both universities, including officials from our university, Keio University, and Hong Kong University, who jointly organized the '3-Campus Consortium' where students live and study in three East Asian universities. Additionally, current students from our university participating in the consortium, as well as representatives from the Yonsei Alumni Association in Japan, were present to congratulate President Seoung Hwan Suh on the conferment of his honorary doctorate.

President Seoung Hwan Suh obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees in economics from our university, followed by a Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University in the United States in 1985. Subsequently, he contributed to the development of the economics department at our university by nurturing future scholars.

As the driving force behind the development of our university's International Campus, he successfully led the entire process from planning to construction. During his tenure as the 19th president, he steered notable growth for our university, including the development of the LearnUs online education platform, the introduction of Korea's first quantum computer, and achieving a global ranking of 76th in the 2024 QS and THE World University Rankings.

Beyond his role in academia, President Seoung Hwan Suh served as the president of the Korean Society of Applied Economics and the Korean Regional Science Association, showcasing his expertise as a specialist in urban economic quantitative analysis. He also actively participated in various policy committees for the city, housing, and regional development as the president of Seoul City and as a committee member for the national government. During his tenure as the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, he promoted policies to invigorate the housing market, contributing to the normalization of South Korea's real estate market.

During the degree conferral ceremony, President Seoung Hwan Suh emphasized the importance of embracing change and increasing diversity as the foundation for maintaining and advancing the university's competitiveness. He expressed his hope for a stronger bond between Keio University and Yonsei University to jointly address and thrive amid the ever-growing transformations.

Yonsei University and Keio University, representing private universities in South Korea and Japan, respectively, have maintained a longstanding friendly relationship through student and sports exchanges, joint hosting of the Korea-Japan Millennium Forum, and recently signed agreements on quantum computing and collaborative online course offerings. Both institutions continue to deepen their international research collaboration, hosting high-level exchanges such as joint symposiums, strengthening their relationship further.
