Institute for Global Engagement and Empowerment - Advancing Sustainable Development Goals

Fostering leaders with a community-oriented mindset

In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape and amid global environmental changes, Yonsei University recognizes sustainable development as a vital agenda and has established the Global Engagement and Empowerment (IGEE) to focus on addressing societal issues through educational activities.

The IGEE was launched in 2017 to contribute to implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by integrating various missionary and volunteer activities within the University, directing intellectual and human resources to address social issues, and education the next generation of global citizens.

The IGEE connects and consolidates various missions and volunteer activities that have been conducted sporadically at Yonsei University and social involvement activities at other institutions. Through the sharing and feedback of experiences and achievements, it facilitates a systematic and professional approach to engagement. Its primary objective is to align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by bridging the gap between on-site activities and academic research as an institution making social contributions encompassing research, education, and field activities.

Yonsei University ranks 14th in the world in THE Impact Rankings

Yonsei has achieved a remarkable milestone by ranking 1st in Korea and 14th in the world in the 2023 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, which was announced on June 1st, 2023.

The THE Impact Rankings, initiated in 2019 by the British global university assessment institution Times Higher Education, is designed to measure a university’s contributions to the achievement of SDGs and its societal impact. The SDGs, established by the United Nations in 2015, represent a collective international endeavor to address 17 pressing global issues, including poverty, healthcare, education, climate change, and employment. The THE Impact Rankings evaluate universities’ progress in three key areas (research, outreach, and stewardship) concerning these 17 SDGs.

Contrary to traditional university assessments that focus on performance-centric global competitiveness, including research accomplishments and educational environments, the THE Impact Rankings place a strong emphasis on a university’s societal stewardship in addressing global challenges. The mounting global attention to universities’ social stewardship has more than doubled the number of participating institutions over the past four years, further elevating the significance of this ranking.

In this year’s THE Impact Rankings with over 1,500 universities worldwide, Yonsei University was proudly ranked 14th, with a 13-step rise from the 27th position in the previous year. This consistent upward trend in both traditional university assessments and impact rankings over the past four years reaffirms Yonsei University’s dedication to shaping a sustainable future for humanity.

In terms of specific SDGs, Yonsei University ranked: ▲5th globally in Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9), ▲8th globally in Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), ▲27th globally in Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), and ▲47th globally in Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17).
