Introduction

Established in 1959 to teach Korean language and culture, Yonsei University Korean Language Institute offers various Korean language courses. Students can choose from a range of courses based on their learning objectives and duration, including 10-week Regular Program, 5-week Summer Special Program, and 3-week Program. The academic year is divided into four terms. Each term, over 2,000 students are enrolled at the Korean Language Institute.

Curriculum

  • Regular Program
    • Regular Program is designed for foreigners and overseas Korean planning to study at Korean universities or graduate schools, or those preparing for business or employment in Korea. Most students planning to study Korean language select this program.
  • The University Korean Program
    • The University Korean Program is intended for foreign students currently enrolled in or planning to apply to Korean universities. The program aims to cultivate Korean language proficiency by focusing on subjects necessary for studying at Korean universities, including university courses and lectures, as well as aspects of university life.
  • Evening Program
    • Evening Program is an online course designed for students such as diplomats and embassy staff residing in Korea, foreign professors, and employees of media organizations who cannot attend face-to-face classes due to work or personal reasons. It provides systematic and effective Korean language education.
  • Advanced Program
    • Advanced Korean Language Program is for students who have graduated from the regular program or The University Korean language program at Yonsei KLI, aiming to further enhance their Korean language proficiency in a more specialized manner.
  • Summer Special Program
    • Summer Special Program is designed for overseas Korean and foreigners who want to learn Korean during the summer vacation. It runs for five weeks starting from the end of June. Students can experience various cultural programs (cultural exploration trips, afternoon special activities, etc.) and learn Korean.
  • 3-Week Program
    • 3-Week Program is designed for students who prefer intensive Korean language learning within a short period. Over the course of three weeks, morning Korean language classes are held, followed by afternoon Korean cultural experiences.

The Institute for Training Korean Language Instructors

Introduction

The institute was established on February 1994 to provide systematic and efficient training in Korean language teaching methods to aspiring Korean language teachers who are currently teaching or want to teach Korean domestically or abroad, and many students have completed the program.

Curriculum

The program is offered six times a year - twice a year for day courses (Jan/Jul) and four times a year for online courses. The class equates to total 120 hours, and is organized into subjects within five areas: Korean Linguistics, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Korean Education as a Foreign Language, Korean Culture, Practice in Teaching Korean.

Registration

Applicants who have completed at least two years of a four-year college or graduates of a two-year or four-year diploma course and those who are currently teaching Korean or plan to teach domestically or abroad are eligible to apply. Documents to be submitted are: applications, self-introduction (training purposes included), a graduation certificate, certificate of employment (if applicable). Trainees are selected by paper screening.

Completion

Trainees who attend at least 85% of the course (including classroom observation and practice in teaching), submit assignments and pass the written test will receive a certificate of completion signed by the president of Yonsei University. After completing the Korean Language Instructors program, you can apply for the Test of Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language(TOTKA, 한국어교육능력검정시험) by National Institute of the Korean Language(NIKL, 국립국어원). If you pass the test, you will earn a Level 3 Korean language teacher certificate through NIKL.
